After the emancipatory reform of 1861 in Russia, and after drinking too much with two civil servant colleagues, the protagonist, Ivan Ilich Pralinski, exposes his desire to adopt a philosophy based on kindness and humanitarianism towards people of lower social status. After leaving Ivan realizes that his driver (who thought the meeting would take longer) is gone, so he decides to take walk and happens to pass in front of the house of one of his subordinates, where a wedding party is being held.
